Subject: Not the last of the epic Sugarees
Just wanted to make sure nobody ignores all Sugarees after this one. In the immediate, 10/17/83 has a very strong version and 6/27/83 is a monster. Easily the tops for 1983. It is true that after 1983, Sugaree was no longer consistently used as a jam vehicle like it was from 10/15/76 through 1983. But there are still some gems out there.
Also, fwiw, 1983 is a criminally underrated year. It was also when the wheels started to fall off, but 83 is stuffed full of top tier epic GD. 4/23, 6/18, 6/27, 9/2, 9/18, 10/15, 10/21 just to name a few off the top of my head. All time great Help>Slip>Franklins, Scarlet> Fire, Terrapin, Morning Dew plus a bunch of killer jams hiding in unusual places. 4/19 is not what I would call a banner night.

a very unusual set list - not so much in the individual songs, but in the order and composition - e.g. Dire Wolf > Big River or Sugaree > Samson. If I ever get back to my unique set list project, I bet this one scores very high.

The last of the MONSTER sugaree's. Beginning in the Spring of 77 Sugaree expanded into LONG versions with multiple LONG, frequently GREAT Garcia guitar breaks. Instead of 7 8 minute versions they expanded to 12,13,15 and 17 minutes in length. While length of a song does not necessarily indicate a good/great version with Sugaree it meant the extra guitar breaks and usually great ones. Also check out this version of ALL over NOW. As long as Im critiqueing sugaree, song lengtht etc. Check out the Ship of Fools from Fall of 79, Ann Arbor etc. First Garcia was still in GOOD vocal form while never a great singer in a classical sense his expressive vocal phrasing was like NO other. These Ship of Fools stand out because again the extra guitar breaks and Jerry's vocal phrasing. Check out Jerry's vocal phrasing on TEn Jed from the spectrum in 11/79. 'Rich man STEP-ON my poor head etc

I'm not sure I would agree this is "bouncy". I do agree that it is pretty good. A different snap shot in time of the greatest rock n' roll band ever to touch the road. Must listen to Dupree's, On The Road Again-> West LA. I ain't the hugest West LA fan...but if I can find a few more as good as this who knows?

for some reason, maine shows have a certain country twang to them. check out augusta in '84 or portland in '82. in years when 'dire wolf,' 'on the road again,' 'durpree's' and 'it's all over now' weren't that uncommon, song selection alone doesn't make this show special. it's the delivery that does. bouncing and jovial and electrically alive is how i would describe this first set. the sound board version has long been a standard in my rotation, but since it's been pulled from d/l ability, grab this one, especially if you believe in the mysterious x factors such as location influencing the band. this is snappy, country friend dead at their '80s best. you wont be disappointed.

This show is Hot, check out that set list. The 1983 spring tour on the East Coast was so hot. Show after show were top notch from Hampton on. Jerry's solos on Duprees (fore-shadow midi 89) along with Brent's psychedelic cranival keyboarding were pretty out there and "On the road again" is a definite treat and played very trippy, can only imagine being there dosin' to this stuff in these times up in beautiful ME.

83 in gerneral is known as the beginning of the so called "junky years". But this show and several more for 83 until 86 are incredibly solid.
This show right here is one of those. It shows the boys on fire and Jerry really spinning some fast notes. Also, the Spanish jam is pretty damn good, though Im partial to it in general, and the He's Gone and Sugaree are scorchers. Thishow was almost impossible to find before the Archive and it so awesome to see it on here!
And dont listen to the other reviewers, the set I SBD is a fine recording. This AUD is kinda muddy but is not to bad and I believe the only SBD of the entire set exists in the vaults. Please dl this one and check it out.
Thanks to Jim WIse for recording and sharing this, and thanks to the GD and Archive for all the wonderful music they have given to us to enjoy for free.
5 for the show as and era, 3.5-4 for the sound. SO 4 over all.
